Stage One Dispensary

Rensselaer Cannabis

Rensselaer doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. Sitting directly across the Hudson from Albany, with sweeping views of the state capital and a history that predates the nation itself, it’s a city with genuine character — working-class roots, a tight-knit community, and a location that puts it at the geographic center of the Capital Region. The Van Rensselaer family, one of the most powerful dynasties in colonial America, built their legacy here. The Hudson River defines its western edge. And Broadway, the city’s main corridor, has been a gathering place for the people of Rensselaer for generations.

Stage One Dispensary is right here on Broadway — at 810 Broadway, Unit C, in the heart of Rensselaer. This isn’t a dispensary that serves Rensselaer from somewhere else. This is Rensselaer’s own. Founded in 2023 by four locally rooted, justice-involved individuals who grew up in this community and wanted to bring something real back to it, Stage One was built for the people who live here. Legal, NY-grown, lab-tested cannabis across every major product category, all-in pricing with every NYS tax included, and a team of budtenders who genuinely know their stuff — open seven days a week for delivery, pickup, or in-person shopping. Welcome to Stage One. Welcome home.

Things to Do

Rensselaer’s history runs deeper than most people realize, and nowhere is that more evident than at Crailo State Historic Site on Riverside Drive. Built in the early 18th century by Hendrick Van Rensselaer, grandson of the First Patroon — the Dutch colonist whose landholdings once encompassed most of present-day Albany and Rensselaer Counties — Crailo is the Museum of the Colonial Dutch in the Hudson River Valley, and one of the most significant historic sites in the entire region. The house itself is a remarkable structure — thick-walled, fortified with gun ports, and originally built on a 17th century foundation that served as a muster point for troops during both the French and Indian Wars and the Revolutionary War. Inside, exhibits explore the daily life of Dutch colonists, artifacts uncovered at the site of Fort Orange, and the complex history of the Dutch Atlantic trading world including its role in the slave trade. Guided tours run Wednesday through Sunday from May through October, with the last tour at 4pm. The grounds and riverside park are free and open to the public year-round from dawn to dusk — a beautiful spot to walk even when the museum is closed.

The Hudson River waterfront is one of Rensselaer’s most underappreciated assets. Running along the city’s western edge, it offers some of the best views of the Albany skyline anywhere in the Capital Region — the dome of the State Capitol, the Empire State Plaza, the bridges connecting the two cities reflected in the water. The riverside is walkable and worth spending time on, particularly at golden hour when the light off the Hudson is genuinely hard to beat. It’s the kind of view that reminds you that Rensselaer has a front-row seat to one of the most historically significant rivers in America.

Hampton Manor Town Park rounds out Rensselaer’s outdoor offerings with a more traditional community park experience. Located on Riverside Drive in the Hampton Manor neighborhood, the park offers open green space, walking paths, and a relaxed community atmosphere that makes it a natural gathering spot for residents throughout the warmer months. It’s the kind of park that doesn’t demand anything of you — just show up, take a walk, and enjoy the surroundings.

Best Restaurants and Bars

Rensselaer’s dining scene is anchored by some genuine local institutions. Illusive Restaurant & Bar at 3 Ferry St is the city’s most celebrated spot — a family-owned, upscale-casual restaurant and bar serving the community since 2015. The burgers have placed in the NYS Beef Council competition multiple times, the wings took first place at the Capital Wing Wars in 2022, and the full bar program is worth sitting at on its own. It’s a hidden gem that rewards the people who bother to find it.

For pizza, Rensselaer has two standouts right on Broadway. Sliders Pizza at 212 Broadway has been a neighborhood institution since 1970 — formerly known as Jim’s, it has run on the same family recipe for over five decades and built a following that drives from across the Capital Region just to get there. Cugino’s Pizzeria at 240 Broadway rounds it out, open for breakfast and lunch through the week and dinner on weekends, with a menu that goes beyond pizza to include calzones, pasta, and an antipasto salad that regulars can’t stop talking about.

For something different, Thai Orchid at 19 2nd Ave is one of Rensselaer’s most pleasant surprises — an unassuming spot with a 4.7 rating and a devoted following for its authentic Thai and Japanese dishes. The mango curry, drunken noodles, and Kao Soi consistently draw raves, and the kitchen accommodates spice preferences and dietary needs with genuine care. It’s the kind of neighborhood restaurant that makes you wonder why more people don’t know about it.

Where to Shop

Broadway is Rensselaer’s main retail corridor, and it has more going on than most people expect. Livilu Boutique at 138 Broadway is one of the street’s standout local businesses — a women’s clothing boutique with a carefully curated selection of trendy, stylish pieces for all ages. It’s the kind of neighborhood shop that makes Broadway feel like a real destination rather than just a through street, and worth a stop if you’re in the area.

For bigger retail needs, Van Rensselaer Square has you covered — Target, TJ Maxx, and Five Below all anchor the shopping center, giving you everything from clothing and home goods to everyday essentials without having to cross the river. It’s convenient, well-stocked, and easy to get in and out of.

And of course, no shopping trip down Broadway is complete without a stop at Stage One Dispensary at 810 Broadway. Rensselaer’s own legally licensed adult-use cannabis dispensary, Stage One is stocked with NY-grown, lab-tested flower, edibles, vapes, pre-rolls, concentrates, and more — with all NYS taxes included in every price and a team that actually knows what they’re talking about. It’s the most unique retail experience on Broadway, and it’s right here at home.
