Does Cannabis/Weed Help You Sleep?

Posted on December 14th, 2025 to Informative by

Cannabis (weed) is widely used as a sleep aid, both recreationally and medically.  Cannabis has been used for sleep support for centuries, and many people still rely on weed for help with falling asleep and/or to sleep better.  A growing number of Americans are using cannabis to manage poor sleep.  Many cannabis users say that cannabis helps them fall asleep faster.  Most recent Sleep Foundation survey, found that roughly 77% of men and 64% of women between 21 and 64 have used cannabis to sleep.
But, cannabis’ effects on sleep architecture remain unclear.  Researchers are unsure whether long-term use is ultimately beneficial or detrimental for sleep quality.  Some studies have shown that chronic cannabis use can disrupt natural sleep cycles and quality of sleep, especially REM sleep, leading to overall poorer quality sleep, frequent nighttime wake-ups, possible insomnia during withdrawal, and increased daytime grogginess.

So what exactly is contained in cannabis that can aid your sleep?

Well, it’s the sedative effects of THC, or rather the compound CBN and CBD.  Cannabinol (CBN) is a cannabinoid, a compound found in cannabis, known for being mildly psychoactive and formed as THC breaks down while interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS).  CBN’s effects include sleep aid, pain reducer, and appetite inducer (though more studies and research of medical qualities are needed).
Cannabidiol (CBD), is a different non-psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant, which is also a popular sleep aid. These cannabinoids help promote sleep by increasing the sleep-inducing chemical adenosine and calming the brain’s arousal system, leading to a sedative effect. It’s believed that these cannabinoids help you sleep because they tell the cannabinoid receptors in your brain to increase adenosine, a neurotransmitter that promotes sleep. Cannabinoids also suppress your brain’s arousal system, which can make you feel sleepy and sedated.
Indica cannabis strains tend to have more CBN and CBD and may feel more calming and promote sleepiness; while sativa strains are often stimulating (though outcomes depend heavily on one’s personal physiology).  Sleep outcomes are greatly influenced by cannabinoid type, dose, and intake method. In a 2023 study that compared the self-reported effects of cannabis to conventional sleep aids revealed that participants reported feeling more refreshed, focused, better able to function, fewer headaches, and less nausea the morning after using cannabis for sleep than after using more conventional sleep aids or no sleep aids.

Short Term Cannabis Sleep Benefits

Current evidence suggests short-term cannabis use might help with sleep problems.  THC can decrease the time it takes to fall asleep and may increase deep sleep also known as slow-wave sleep (SWS), which is important for restoration. Cannabis has also been show to improve sleep by helping people with chronic conditions like pain, PTSD, or restless legs syndrome fall asleep faster, wake less during the night, and experience better sleep overall.

Chronic Cannabis Use May Lead to Worsened Quality of Sleep

If you are a chronic cannabis user, your body builds tolerance to THC, which requires higher consumption to reach the same effect.  Besides building tolerance to THC, some of the long-term side effects for habitual cannabis use is worsened sleep quality, which affects slow-wave sleep (SWS) or deep sleep.  Deep sleep is the most restorative stage of phase of sleep.  During SWS or deep sleep, the brain waves (delta waves)  are slow and strong, your heart rate and breathing is slowed way down, your muscles are fully relaxed, and your body is able to repair itself.  These high-amplitude delta brain waves are crucial for memory consolidation, aids in your immune functions, brain detoxification (which peaks in childhood and declines with age), and is crucial for physical recovery and feeling refreshed.  It’s the hardest stage to wake someone from.   Most adults spend 10 to 20% of their sleep in SWS.  It is believed that chronic cannabis use can lead to worsened sleep quality and less SWS, more nighttime awakenings, and overall poorer sleep.
THC has also been known to suppress Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, which is responsible for our dreams, and may affect one’s mood and memory.  When you stop using cannabis, suppressed REM sleep rebounds, causing more intense sleep disruption, causing vivid dreams, making cannabis difficult to quit. One of the main reasons people keep using cannabis is because when they try to stop, they are hit with insomnia.

Some studies have also found distinctions between cannabis daily users and non-daily users. Those who use cannabis daily are more likely to report sleep problems than occasional users or people who do not use cannabis at all. Non-daily users report fewer sleep issues than both daily users and non-users.

Cannabis Strains Most Commonly Used for Sleep

While there are many indica strains on the market, the following strains are most often recommended for their sleep inducing qualities:

    1. Northern Lights is a sleep-commanding strain that has been a go-to for cannabis consumers for quite some time. Northern Lights is one of the most famous and sought-after Indica strains of all time. It traces its origin to Afghani and Thai landrace strains, though the exact origin of Northern Lights remains a bit of a mystery. It may have originated in Washington in the 1970s, prior to reaching the Netherlands, where breeder Neville Schoenmaker pioneered several Northern Lights phenotypes in the ’80s for The Seed Bank, an early iteration of Sensi Seeds.  Since 1985, when Sensi Seeds first commercialized this strain, Northern Lights has been a landmark Indica strain in cannabis culture. Northern Lights #5 — arguably the most popular Northern Lights phenotype — won the Cannabis Cup in 1989, 1990, and 1992.
    2. Granddaddy Purple (GDP) goes by many different names, including “Grand Daddy Purp,” “Granddaddy Purps,” “GDP,” and “Grandaddy Purple Kush.” It has long been hailed as one of the best Indica strains for sleep. Popularized in 2003 by Ken Estes, GDP is a famous indica cross of Mendo PurpsSkunk, and Afghani strain. With a heavy myrcene terpene content, GDP gives you a dream-like buzz and may help with pain. This can be a good combination of effects for people who have difficulty sleeping due to pain. GDP has complex grape and berry aroma from its Purps and Ghani heritage. GDP flowers bloom in shades of deep purple, a contrasting backdrop for its snow-like dusting of white crystal resin. Its potent effects are clearly detectable in both mind and body, delivering a fusion of cerebral euphoria and physical relaxation while your thoughts float in a dreamy wonderland.
    3. Brownie Scout is an Indica-dominant hybrid and is said to be one of the best weed strains for insomnia. As many as 20 percent of reviewers on Leafly claim the strain helped them with insomnia, and most users do report a heavily sedating effect.
    4. Original Glue, aka OG, The strain reportedly offers deeply relaxing and sedative effects that leave the user with a clear mind, an elevated mood and possibly a case of the munchies. which is also referred to as Gorilla Glue or GG4, is a hybrid cannabis strain revered for its heavy-handed relaxing effects. The top reported effects include relaxed and sleepy, and the strain actually gets its name from the fact that it is so relaxing that you may feel “glued” in place.
    5. Louis XIII, also known as “King Louis,” “Louis XIII Kush,” and “King Louie” is an indica marijuana strain made by crossing OG Kush with LA Confidential. It is named for its royal high caliber of THC. Growers report the strain comes from a rare cut of the Los Angeles-based OG Kush that was specially bred for higher potency. The cultivar features unmistakable OG characteristics: its dense sticky nugs littered with trichomes have an overwhelmingly piney, diesel and skunk smell with an earthy musk that will have you thinking of your last forest adventure. King Louis limonene as the dominant terpene. King Louis reportedly makes you feel relaxed, sleepy, and happy.
    6. Slurricane is an indica marijuana strain bread by crossing Do-Si-Dos with Purple Punch. Slurricane produces relaxing effects that come on slowly. This strain has a sweet flavor profile, with subtle grape and sugary berries. Slurricane is the ideal strain for relaxing after a long day and will likely leave you locked to your sofa. Many cannabis connoisseurs choose this strain to help relieve symptoms associated with insomnia. Slurricane’s main terpenes are caryophyllene (pepper), limonene and myrcene.

Is Cannabis Right for You?

Whether or not you want to consume cannabis as a sleep aid is a very personal decision.  Cannabis is known to help people fall asleep, relieves nightmares and insomnia.  Many cannabis user successfully manage their sleep patterns and insomnia consuming strain and product specifically designed for sleep.  However, some people find it makes them feel more paranoid or anxious. If you do not like the feeling of being “high,” try a strain with a higher amount of CBN and CBD and lower amounts of THC.

Conclusion

In summary: while cannabis might feel like a sleep aid in the short term, especially for falling asleep; like with any drugs, heavy or prolonged use may disrupt restorative sleep and creating dependency, making sleep worse in the long run.  Further research using standardised protocols and larger samples is needed to clarify the relationship between cannabis and sleep architecture and to address the discrepancies between subjective sleep improvements and objective sleep metrics.
